Monday 17nth of February

We met with Kalliopi on a sunny winter day outside the Kerameikos subway station. I would stay in Athens for less than 48 hours, but this time I wanted to experience something totally new . For the first time, I wanted to do a street art tour in my own Athens . Lately on my travels, searching for street art had become an activity I found very interesting .

But what did the Athenian scene have to offer? Greek Couple Travelers as you will find on instagram or otherwise Kalliopi and Thomas are experts on this one and besides travel, street art is their element.

During the street art Athens Tour

Starting from Gazi we walked among some of the most beautiful neighborhoods of Athens admiring works by Greek and foreign artists. Street art as an art form was exploded sometime after the crisis of 2008. It was no longer just wall paintings but a new artistic category . Works that express emotions, social situations and thrive with political messages. Nowadays, many projects are done in partnership with large companies or for a major event and are widely accepted if not loved by locals.

Athens, occupying a large number of abandoned buildings, became an oasis for artists seeking an empty canvas and also giving the Greek capital a much needed color.

We passed through Gazi, Monastiraki and Psyrri, among others. Kalliopi informed me about the artists behind the works and the details behind the works themselves. In the end street art in Athens is amazing and I had no idea about it!

Part of the tour is also a coffee stop but our time was limited so we left it for the next time. There were also so many things that Kalliopi wanted to show me yet.

Finishing our tour in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the world

The street art tour in Athens lasts about three hours and ends in the area of Kerameikos. There you will take a stop to taste the best souvlaki in Athens and learn more about the neighborhood . For those who don’t know, it was voted by “Forbes” magazine as one of the coolest neighborhoods to stay!
